Habibi, oil on linen, 30x24, 2017-ongoing
Habibi - in Arabic it means “my baby”, “dear”, “my love”, “my darling”.
During the period I lived in Berlin’s district mostly inhabitated by Arabic people, I developed series of “Habibi” paintings made as gifts for my neighbours. The colours were inspired by the neon vitrines of local shops and restaurants owned by Arabic people in the district of Neukolln.
In the time of fear of the other, I decided to make this work as a symbol of possible friendship. I come from extremely catholic country - Poland in which the fear of Arabs and Muslims is very high. By painting the “habibi” paintings and giving them to the Arab people I am remaking the gesture of the possible friendship.
I gave one of paintings to an owner of Palestinian hummus restaurant on Sonnenallee, Berlin. He claims that he does the best hummus in the world. He liked my gesture and he decorated he’s place.
